Unlike the rest of the team, Mike Caddy did not grow up surrounded by horses. Having worked his way up in International Banking, several years ago he invested a bonus from work in a share in a racehorse and swiftly became hooked in racehorse ownership. Having had several successful horses in training with William Muir, such as the ace sprinter Texas Gold and the Bunbury Cup winner, Material Witness, Mike decided that he would like to start retiring some of his fillies and build up his own stud. In 2003, Mike purchased Heatherwold Stud, which then underwent a major revamp. SInce then several of his fillies have retired to the paddocks, with several more currently in training, soon to follow in their footsteps. Although Mike still lives in Hong Kong for parts of the year, he is able, via satelite CCT, to keep an eye on all that goes on at the stud, including watching the foalings. With the assistance of WIliam Muir, Mike selects all the potenital pinhooks and nominations for the stud and is very much an active Director.
William was born and grew up on his parents’ Fawley Stud and has spent his entire life surrounded by horses. As a successful trainer on the flat, William has trained the likes of Averti, Zargus and Enforcer, to name but a few. At Heatherwold, William brings a solid knowledge of the Thoroughbred industry and ensures the stud is up to date with current bloodstock fashion. William assists with the purchasing of foals to pinhook and with all nominations and is invaluable at sales time, especially when deciding which sale to tailor the yearlings towards.
Brother to William, Iain is a true horseman through and through, having also grown up at his family’s Fawley Stud. Iain has been involved in stud work all his life and has had many years of experience in running public studs and managing broodmares at the highest level. Iain has worked at the likes of Lavington and Theobalds Studs and was for many years manager at Fawley Stud, which stood the likes of Faustus and Reprimand.
Ursula Muir has long been involved with horses, starting from a solid grounding in the hunting field. She managed her family farm for many years, before diversifying it towards stud work where she stood the sprinter Superpower. Having worked at Theobalds Stud and Lavington Stud, Ursula is exceptional with the youngstock and has a real eye for their development. To this end she is responsible for the feeding programs for all the horses at Heatherwold and is invaluable at all the foalings.
Jo Muir has had plenty of experience with stud work. Employed at Fawley Stud and later at North Farm Stud. Jo latterly worked for the NFU organising general insurance and the office accounts. We managed to lure her back to stud work where she is proving a great asset to the team, especially during yearling preparation. Recently Jo has taken on the office work following Clare Aikenhead's departure from Heatherwold Stud.
Bodge is the longest surviving member of the team having been here since 1991. Having grown up in Burghclere, Bodge spent a few years in the steelwork industry before coming to work at Heatherwold. He is involved in all aspects of the stud work and in particular takes care of the paddock work in the summer months.
